Automobile Safety: Proper Restraints

Koester & Bradley Accident AttorneysAutomobile accidents occur every day on Illinois roads.  As car accident attorneys we see the dangers every day. Some of these accidents result in injury or even death. Drivers can take steps to avoid getting into an accident by driving defensively and driving within the speed limit. Not all accidents can be avoided however. If another driver is distracted or drunk they may cause a major collision without allowing you the opportunity to get out of the way. Therefore it is important to make sure you and your passengers are as safe as you can possibly be should an accident occur. This means making sure everyone is properly restrained.

Set the Example

Even if you are just planning on driving around the block you should put your seat belt on. Be the example for everyone in your vehicle. In addition, if you are in the habit of buckling up you will be less likely to forget in the future. No matter how short the trip, buckle your seat belt.

Car Seat Regulations

Check the car seat regulations for Illinois. Make sure you are in compliance. Keep in mind that the regulations have changed over the years. The rules that were in place for your oldest child may not be the same as the current laws.

Car Seat Installation

Once you have determined that you are using the correct car seat for your child, make sure it is properly installed in your vehicle. An improperly installed car seat will not provide adequate protection. Safety seat fitting stations are available throughout Illinois to help you verify everything is correct.

Always Buckle Your Child

A car seat is not going to help your child if they aren’t buckled it in. Just as you should always buckle yourself, always buckle your child. Taking the few extra minutes to make sure they are properly restrained could prevent injury or fatality.

According to Illinois Department of Transportation 43% of fatal crashes involved unrestrained occupants.  The injuries associated with vehicle restraints pale in comparison to those of unrestrained passengers. Avoid becoming part of this awful statistic by properly buckling yourself and your passengers every time you get in the car. Contact us to learn more about automobile accidents and safety and if you or a loved one was unfortunate enough to be in an automobile accident in Champaign-Urbana or Central Illinois call us to see how we can help.
